What is direct access?

Direct access trading enables you to establish direct contact with the exchanges and ECNs (electronic communication networks).

What is the difference between day trading and direct access brokerage?

Day trading is an investment method that involves trading several times within the same stock exchange session whereas direct access brokerage is an investment service that provides direct access to the exchanges and parallel markets (ECNs).

What are ECNs ?

ECNs are electronic communication networks that disseminate the price and size of open orders and match buy and sell orders for a given share.

What is the difference between Level I and Level II?

Level I provides real-time quotes, including the highest price, lowest price, bid, ask, volume, price of the last transaction and any price variation. Level II indicates the depth of the market, allowing the investor to see orders behind the bid and ask for a given share.



Trading & Platforms
I am a DDweb user and would like to see more than 10 quotes simultaneously. How can I do this?

As a client, you can download DDquotes to monitor up to 300 real time dynamic quotes simultaneously. Please ensure that your system meets the minimums specified in the System Requirements section.

How do I download DDxtra and DDplus?

In the Trading Platforms section, click on the platform of your choice and follow the downloading procedures at the very bottom of the page.

Are there any fees for using your platforms?

Yes, DDweb, DDplus and DDxtra have an utilisation fee. However, it is important to note that these fees can be waived depending on your monthly trading volume. To view the fees related to the platforms, please see our fees & commissions section.

When do I start paying for platform fees?

Usage fees are not charged for Disnat Direct Web, Disnat Direct Plus, Disnat Direct Custom platforms for the first two months following first access to your new account (the free months are two calendar months so it is advantageous for your first access be early in the month). After the first two free months, your account will be charged, at the beginning of each month, based on the platform you use and the activity in the account. Current month billing is based on the number of executed trades in the previous month. If for any reason you foresee not needing to use Disnat Direct’s services and wish to avoid user fees for the following month please notify us by email, of your desire to temporarily suspend your account, before the last day of the current month

 

Are my trades cumulative?

All orders are treated individualy and on a daily basis. Therefore, if several orders for the same stock are sent during the day, the minimum commission is applicable on each order. As well, the minimum commission will be apply each day an order is partially executed.

Which markets can I trade on?

At Disnat Direct, you have access to ECNs and market makers. This allows you to trade US stocks on the NASDAQ, NYSE, AMEX, OTCBB and the CBOE. You can also trade on the TSX Exchange, TSX Venture Exchange and the Montreal Exchange (options) in Canada.

What are the minimum technical requirements for your sites and platforms?

Please see our System Requirements page for this information.

Do I have to be good with computers to be able to use your site?

If you use the Internet regularly and got to this point on your own, then you have enough experience to use our site. You do not have to be a computer expert to successfully manage your own portfolio!

How do I modify my screen resolution?
  1. Click the right mouse button anywhere on the desktop, and then click on Properties.
  2. On the Display Properties tab, click Settings.
  3. In the Colours list, select the best colour setting available.
  4. Move the Screen area pixel slider as far to the right as possible. Note the number of pixels.
  5. In the Colours list, select the next lower setting. Move the Screen area slider to the far right and note the pixels available. Determine which setting gives you the best resolution. Remember, the more pixels, the better the resolution.
  6. Select the colour setting that offers the best resolution. Click Apply. Windows will temporarily change your desktop.

If everything appears to be normal, click "Yes" when the system asks if you want to conserve these parameters. If a message pops up asking you to restart your computer, click "Yes".

How do I modify the configuration to accept cookies?

In order to activate cookies, go in the "Tools" pull down menu and select "Internet Options". Then click on "Security". Then, move the slider all the way to the bottom, thus indicating to your browser that you accept cookies.



Computer Info
Are my computer and Internet connection fast enough to use Disnat Direct?

An inefficient computer or a slow Internet connection can reduce the direct access trading platforms' performance. Therefore, it is important to insure that they meet the minimum system requirements.

I am using a firewall or a router. Are there any particular settings that I should follow to use your software?

Please see our firewall technical support document. If you are experiencing difficulties with the Disnat Direct platforms, please do not hesitate to contact one of our Client Service Representatives at 1-866-873-7103.

Why doesn't my Disnat Direct platform work? I get an .dll error.

The Disnat Direct platforms will not work with Windows Millenium Edition (ME). Windows XP or Windows 2000 is recommended.

Are there additional fees to access the TSX Venture Exchange?

Yes, but only if you do not meet the minimum trading requirements per month. To find out more about the additional fee, please see our fees & commissions section.

How can I have access to the TSX Venture Exchange?

You must send us an email stating that you wish to have access to the TSX Venture Exchange.

How can I cancel access to the TSX Venture Exchange should I no longer want it (thereby avoiding the additional fees)?

In order to avoid quote fees for the following month, you must send us an email before the last day of the current month.

How can I get access to the Montreal Exchange (MX) to trade options?

You need to send us an email stating that you want to have access to the Montreal Exchange (MX).

Can I access my Disnat Direct account from a computer other than the one I normally use (when I am on vacation, for example)?

Yes, DDxtra and DDplus users can use a DDweb access to access their account using the same user ID and password. DDweb users can access their account just like usual. Make sure that the computer used meets the minimum system requirements.

As a Disnat Direct client, can I access my account using my computer at work?

Yes, as long as the computer satisfies the minimum system requirements. Also, make sure that you do not have a firewall or Internet security that would prevent any data transmission.

Why doesn't my demo user ID and password work or it says that it is invalid?
Why can't I log back into my DDweb account?

In order to properly log out, you must click on log out. If not, you will not be able to log back in next time, until you call us at 514-842-0582 or 1-877-842-0582.

Is there any delayed data on Disnat Direct?

Only Canadian graphs on DDweb are delayed 15 minutes. Everything else is in real-time.

Can I combine more than one account to calculate fees and trades?

You can have a single log in for all of the accounts for which you have trading authorization. Trading volumes and applicable commissions for the current calendar month are based on the combined activity of all accounts linked to the same login ID during the preceding calendar month. For example, if you use DDweb and execute 12 trades in your own account and 4 trades your spouse's account, the commissions charged in both accounts will be at the preferred rate (max $9.95) and your platform fees will be waived.

Can I trade Bonds and Mutual Funds?

Yes, but only by telephone. Extra charges will apply. Our platforms were developed for active stock and option traders.

Can I use your services if I come from Asia / Europe / South America?

Yes, but you must have a Canadian social insurance number and be a Canadian resident.

Can I transfer funds from my Disnat Direct account to my bank?
Can I request a cheque?
Can I convert funds from Canadian to US and vice-versa?
Can I make RSP contributions?

Yes, fund transfers, fund conversions, and RSP contributions are possible. Please visit the Fund Transfers section.

I do not receive my confirmation slips by mail, how will I see or receive them?

Confirmation slips are not sent by mail. You can access this section by going to the DDweb site in the Client Access section, and then the Confirmations section. From there you will be able to download your confirmations to your computer and print them, if you wish.

When will I receive my monthly account statement?

You should receive them around the 15th day of each month.

How can I change my password?

To change your password you must log in to the DDweb site and go to "Account Settings" under the Customer Service section. Input your new password and click Change Data.

Can I modify an order that is partially filled?

Yes, you can modify all orders sent to the TSX. You can also modify orders sent to the US markets via ARCA.
